Founded in the Philippines in 1985, the Asian Medical Students’ Association aims to unite and empower its members through three overarching themes; Knowledge, Action and Friendship. The AMSA-IMU chapter was formed as an extension of this philosophy, reaching out to medical students from the International Medical University in Malaysia.
AMSA-IMU strives to encourage future doctors to participate and reflect on a range of community oriented issues, whilst also giving them ample opportunities to use the knowledge and experience they gain to shape their future conduct as medical professionals. A combination of teamwork, compassion and principled organization is required when dealing with each special interest project, aiming not only to create a lasting difference within the community, but also to impart valuable lessons amongst volunteers.
AMSA-IMU has a well established local presence, with a vast range of long-running projects to date. The Dream Bigger, Reaching Out program (DBRO) erases borders by providing teaching sessions to refugee children, conducted by student volunteers. Regular cancer screening events, run in conjunction with Empowered (The Cancer Advocacy Society of Malaysia), ensures that members of the public are checked and educated with regards to their health and cancer. Scheduled visits to neighboring medical schools enhance levels of collaboration and communication between fellow medical students, and display AMSA-IMU’s active presence. The association also hosts its own unique workshop, called the National Pathology and Anatomy Summit (NAPS). Here, students from multiple medical schools in Malaysia participate in student-driven workshops, image-based quizzes and clinical case presentations.
Student volunteers serve as the backbone of AMSA-IMU. The Ambassador Project has been a staple in the association’s history. Every semester, incoming students are given the opportunity to work together and formulate events with the intention of raising awareness and improving public health. This gives students the ability to direct their drive and motivation towards projects that would benefit disadvantaged groups, creating a sense of duty and well-roundedness that all future doctors should aspire towards.
AMSA-IMU’s presence is not only limited to the local scene, but also extends internationally. The Asian Medical Students’ Exchange Program (AMSEP), facilitates an environment where medical school students hailing from all parts of Asia can mingle and interact with each other. AMSA-IMU has successfully hosted and visited students from medical schools in the Philippines, Japan, Taiwan, and beyond.
While many events were listed above, AMSA-IMU is involved in numerous others. The widespread nature of the group’s activities points towards its well-established reputation in Malaysia. With the help of an ambitious and compassionate community of medical students, the themes of Knowledge, Action and Friendship will survive for future generations.
